Open Source: Building Communities for the Future
The mission of Open Source is simple. As a key proponent of this approach states, "It’s about getting all of the smart people in the world to work together to reduce interoperability barriers and improve healthcare delivery."
Open Source is about empowering the community of developers—not just developers at Misys—but the best developers worldwide. The goal is to energize developers to create solutions that are not tied to one vendor or technology, but to overcome the common HIE challenges faced by the healthcare industry as a whole.
Participants in Open Source development build software that can be used by anyone for any related purpose. Because the software is not proprietary and is expected to be developed and improved in a transparent way in the Open Source community, a wide variety of service options for implementing and supporting the software are expected to emerge from multiple vendors.
By facilitating the standardized adoption of EMR, Open Source will facilitate the creation of regional health networks that exchange data and patient records. Access to source code will allow each region to adapt the software to its specific requirements without having to develop an entire software suite from scratch. In turn, regional innovation is expected to filter back to the larger health care community, advancing the technology while minimizing costs.
